3D Running Gait re-training

3D Running Gait re-training

What happens during the 3D motion capture gait re-training appointment?

  1. Our specialists will place markers onto your feet, ankles, knees, hips and lower back to start the calibration. This can take up to 30 minutes. You’ll need to bring your running attire.
  2. Once you are calibrated with the system, you’ll run at your usual pace on a treadmill and we will start to track your specific movement patterns during running. We analyse movement from the spine down, reviewing; rotation of the femur and tibia, movement of your lower legs during running, velocity of movement, cadence, vertical excursion, foot strike pattern amongst further detailed biomechanical parameters including asymmetry.
  3. This is a “live” 3D gait analysis appointment lasting up to 60 minutes where you can see what’s happening to your legs during running with each step. This means that we can give you live “cue’s” or commands to improve the way you run. When we change how you run using data, we immediately see the positive and negative impacts of any adaptions we make, so that we can tailor the advice to suit your individual needs.
  4. Between appointments you’ll practice what you’ve learnt until the next appointment. At the next appointment we will re-test your pattern and discuss further progressions. Generally you would attend once per month for 3 months.

Who can benefit from a 3D running gait re-training appointment?

3D gait re-training is suitable for runners without pain looking to improve running efficiency and to help prevent injury. If you are looking to get back into running following an injury to your foot, knee, hip or back, then improving your running pattern and utilising 3D data capture can help you to reduce load / impact and force within your body. Patients who are new to running should also consider this service to build a foundation of good running habits to improve running efficiency and help to prevent injury.

What happens after a 3D gait analysis appointment?

A typical treatment plan to re-train your running gait pattern consists of attending one appointment per month for 3 appointments Some patients only need 1-2 appointments and others may take longer to adapt, but our standard protocol would be to schedule 3 appointments, once per month.

These appointments are a little like the idea of golf lessons. You have a golf lesson, then you practice in between before the next golf lesson. Between your gait re-training appointments, you’ll practice what you’ve learnt to improve your running pattern.
