Incidence of foot pain : As a team of foot specialists we review, treat and manage foot pain from elite sports to the weekend warrior, within Wimbledon and Earlsfield. Almost a third of all sports related injuries are as a result of foot and ankle pain. A study which was published recently in 2017, by the American journal of sports medicine reported a 27 % incidence of foot pain throughout a 2 year period. The authors observed 1076 elite athletes who competed in 37 sports. Of the 1076 athletes they suffered a total of 3861 reported musculoskeletal injuries through the data collection period of 2 years. 1035 where related to the foot and ankle. Common injuries included fasciopathies, ligament injuries and tendonopathies such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonopathy, heel pain and stress fractures. Although this study combines 37 varying sports and doesn’t have control groups regarding age or gender, it highlights that injuries are common in any sport. The article shows how important you should be taking niggles and minor sports injuries related to your foot and ankle.
